THE PORTRAIT OF GOD
Upon a wall in the great Bayt of al-Kiritliya
There's a portrait of God as a wine-drinking / wine-giving mountain
Overflowing through the virgin haven of time
Like a soft sworn word in bloom
This is only a pressing pulse of hues
Yet it is the manner of art and God and time --
The tale of the last dusk was etched upon
the dawning of creation’s verse
And abreast this swelling well of lurid light
The wine of god breathes over this boundless voyage
So passing strange
yet so wonderful
